Sav-Newlands Cottage up for rebuilding
The Cayman National Recovery Fund and the Bodden Town District Assistance Fund have joined forces to undertake a very special rebuilding project in Savannah. At the request of the Savannah-Newlands Community Development Action Committee, both organisations have donated $25,000 each to rebuild the cottage at the Savannah playground which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan.
The cottage had served as a home to Mr. Charles Henry, caretaker of the premises, since 1997. With the facility being used for many community events such as the annual District Day, fundraisers and even birthday parties, Mr. Henry or 'Lance' as he's affectionately known, has taken care of the playground's upkeep and repair throughout the years.
Now that his own home needs rebuilding, the committee members and district volunteers have rallied to assist in restoring the home. The monies from the Fund and the Bodden Town District Assistance Fund will be bolstered with donations such as all electrical work donated by HayLec and plumbing will be provided by another supporter.
Speaking on behalf of the National Recovery Fund, Executive director Dr. Mark Laskin said "This facility has played an important role in the community and we have Mr. Henry to thank for keeping it in tip top shape for many to enjoy. We commend the Savannah-Newlands Committee members for getting the ball rolling on this project; they have shown true community spirit and we are pleased to be involved."
Bodden Town District Assistance Fund chairman George Ebanks added, "Rebuilding the cottage is an excellent opportunity to bring about a positive change to both Mr. Henry and to the entire district."
Once complete, the cottage will be named 'Kadie's Cottage' to commemorate the life Ms. Kadie Ebanks, Vice-Chairman of the SAV-NEW Committee who died earlier this year. "Kadie wanted to make sure the facility was up-to-scratch and she was a driving force in spearheading repairs to the play field. She was a dedicated community worker," stated Heather Bodden, Chairman of the Sav-New Community Development Action Committee.
The National Recovery Fund is a private independent trust, set up to provide relief to those most affected by the hurricane. The Fund and has been instrumental in carrying out repairs to many homes around the island and relies solely on private donations.
