Hurricane Ivan was a Category 5 storm that devastated the Cayman Islands in September, 2004. The entire country experienced Hurricane Ivan's fierce force. Communities feared for their lives and livelihoods were threatened. However, the greatest lasting impact of all was the devastation to homes. Hurricane Ivan didn't discriminate. Million dollar homes were damaged alongside those in the poorest areas. Housing remains the most affected individual sector, costing the economy some US$1.7 billion. Approximately 83% of dwellings (13,535 homes) were affected, with about 4% (652 homes) completely destroyed. Even one year later, an estimated 273 families remain exposed to the elements in severely damaged homes and an estimated 300 families remain homeless as they await assistance in completely rebuilding their homes. We are just beginning to uncover many families still without the basics, electricity, running water, sewage systems, all of which, to date, have been too proud to come forward and ask for help.

Established on September 23rd, 2004, the Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund (CINRF) is a private, independent, non governmental, charitable fund focused on helping those most vulnerable, the elderly, disabled, ill, and families with young children, to restore their lives and recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Ivan. Only 2% of our budget is used for administrative costs, leaving 98% of all contributions available to directly serve those in need.

We thank you for your support as we look to restore these families to suitable living conditions. Significant funds are still needed to truly restore the Cayman Islands to its pre-Hurricane Ivan days. Before we can say "Cayman is recovered" it is essential that everyone is living in decent, dry and safe homes.
